Bioleaching of a Chalcocite-Dominant Copper Ore from Salta, Argentina, by Mesophilic and Thermophilic Microorganisms

The study and development of new sustainable mining methods to exploit low-grade ores secondary metallic resources are essential meet global demand contribute caring for the environment. Copper is one most widely used metals chalcocite main sulfide this metal. Therefore, copper recovery from chalcocite-dominant minerals could have a great impact on industry. In study, we assess at bench scale feasibility applying biohydrometallurgical processes extract chalcocite-rich Taca Taca, Argentina, using native mesophilic microorganisms (30 °C) thermophiles (45, 65 °C). indigenous consortium was dominated by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans solubilize all present in systems (113 mg/L) within three weeks without any change pH solution. Notably, increasing temperature up 45 °C, leaching enhanced, completing 7–14 days. oxidizing active these conditions were Ferroplasma sp. Acidianus copahuensis, respectively.
